Abstract

This article provides a scholarly analysis of the impact of globalization on Japan’s national identity, with particular attention to cultural continuity, societal transformation, and the negotiation of traditional values in a rapidly globalizing world. The study examines how economic interdependence, transnational information flows, intensified cultural exchange, and the growing mobility of populations influence the stability and evolution of Japan’s identity constructs. Key cultural elements–such as washoku (traditional cuisine), the ie family system, and the principle of wa (social harmony) –are explored to illustrate the dynamic interplay between global pressures and local cultural resilience. The findings suggest that Japan demonstrates a dual strategy: embracing global integration while simultaneously reinforcing mechanisms to preserve and adapt its distinctive national identity.
